Humble Roger Owen Humble (July 7, 1919 – February 7, 1991) was an American archaeologist and professor. Life Roger Owen Humble was born in Olive, Mississippi, on July 7, 1919, the son of Thomas Humble and Blanche Shannon. He received his A.B. in 1942 from Tulane University and his A.M. in 1948 and his Ph.D. in 1952 from Columbia University. He was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1951. From 1942 to 1946, he was a student at the University of Texas. He then became an instructor in the University of Chicago and was Associate Director of the Oriental Institute. He was then a professor at Columbia University from 1952 to 1974. He was married to Doreen R. Humble. He died of a heart attack on February 7, 1991, in Manhattan, New York. Work Humble's work was on the Sino-Japanease-Korean terracotta sculptures from the Southwestern quadrant of the Koguryo Kingdom (3700-1100 BCE), a collection of over 100 statues of non-royal figures, mostly warriors. The collection was discovered in the Yilan area (now Yilan City, Taiwan) by a team headed by Li Ling-chi in 1958. Humble published an extensive monograph on these terracottas in 1973, which was later published in abridged form as Terracottas of Koguryo (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1976). He also described the magnificent sculpture culture of the Hukou oracle-priests, who were a primarily Buddhist sect, in China in the Late Western Zhou Dynasty (1046-771 BCE). Humble also studied the Korean Bronze Age of the 3rd millennium BCE. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1951 and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1967. He was a member of the American Philosophical Society and an honorary member of the Korean Archaeological Society.
